80/20 Rule

By Gary Earl

We’ve all heard that old 80/20 rule of thumb. The most ‘successful’ music tends to be 80% familiarity, 20% originality.  Recently math & computer scientists designed a piece of music that NEVER repeats any of the melody.  Listen here, you won’t believe how ugly and uncomfortable it is.  (personally I I don’t consider it music)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RENk9PK06AQ

So stop worrying about being totally original with every rhyme, rhythm and chord progression in your songs. People’s ears NEED familiarity for a comfort zone.

Just get back to expressing ideas you believe in, or sharing emotions you’re feeling and others are too, and know that the originality comes from the fact that it’s YOU saying it from your own viewpoint given your life’s unique blend of perspectives and experiences.
